Jargon, verbal shorthand, regionalisms and technical terms occupy more of our speech than we might care to admit. In an insular community we manage to get by; we all (mostly) understand each other. But what happens when a guest walks into our room and wants to join our conversation? How would we explain to them, for instance, what we mean when we say, “I believe in the forgiveness of sins”?
